Secure mobile communication

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Secure mobile communication (mostly abbreviated as SiMKo ) is a solution recommended by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for secure mobile communication via mobile phone . Since 2010, smartphones have mostly been used for this purpose . The SiMKo phones belong to the class of crypto cell phones .

The SiMKo encryption technology was developed by T-Systems .

SiMKo versions

SiMKo

The prototype was presented by T-Systems at CeBIT in spring 2007 and was intended to be an alternative to Blackberry . Since the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) pointed out technical deficiencies and the high safety requirements had not yet been fully met, the development time was extended to the end of 2007.

SiMKo 2

The procurement office of the Federal Ministry of the Interior signed a framework agreement with T-Systems in 2009/2010 .

In addition to voice encryption, SiMKo 2 has a personal security concept for e-mail traffic. It is based on the S / MIME standard for encryption and electronic signature . Together with the IT security company Certgate and VPN provider NCP, the SiMKo2 devices are supplied to "around 350 federal organizations" .

Since 2010 there have been four specially modified HTC smartphone models (including among others: HTC Touch Pro2 , HTC HD2 and HTC Snap ), which run with the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system . The BSI pronounced “the 'specific application recommendation' for smartphones” for the secrecy level “classified material - only for official use” (VS-NfD) .

SiMKo 3

SiMKo3 was presented at CeBIT 2012 and is an extension of Simko2. In the previous version SiMKo2 only business applications were possible, with SiMKo3 private applications can be used on the smartphone in a separate mode. The camera and WiFi access work in this mode .

The original software has been removed from the standard Android smartphones from Samsung ( Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy S III ). A spin-off from Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs), Trust2Core GmbH, replaced the software with a microkernel system that serves as a virtualization layer . This allows several operating systems to run side by side and under real-time conditions, using the concept of Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS). SiMKo3 was also developed for use on tablet computers . The basis was a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 , which has largely the same components as the Galaxy S III. The price for such a smartphone starts at 1700 euros. On September 9, 2013 it was announced that SiMKo3 had received BSI approval. In October 2014, Deutsche Telekom confirmed that the development of the SiMKo 3 had been put on hold.
