The Telekom Innovation Laboratories (short: T-Labs ) are the R & D unit of Deutsche Telekom and also an affiliated institute of the Technical University of Berlin connected. Over 300 international experts and scientists are driving forward topics such as blockchain technology, smart city concepts, artificial intelligence and new media experiences. At the locations in Berlin , Darmstadt , Be'er Scheva (Israel) , Budapest and Vienna , the T-Labs are surrounded by leading universities, start-ups, investors, research institutes and industrial innovation institutions in order to jointly develop the future of communication services shape. The T-Labs have been cooperating with the Israeli Ben Gurion University of the Negev since 2006 and also with other universities, such as the University of the Arts in Berlin , the Eötvös-Loránd University in Budapest and the Vienna University of Technology .

history

The T-Labs were founded in 2004 as the central research and development institute of Deutsche Telekom under the direction of Manfred Jeromin. As an affiliated institute of the TU Berlin, they follow a consistent open innovation approach and in this construction are themselves an innovation and have pioneered a new form of research and development. In a report for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the T-Labs were highlighted as a benchmark example for modern innovation management .

At the beginning, 25 Telekom employees and around 50 scientists from many countries worked at T-Labs. Peter Möckel took over the management from November 2004 to 2011. Under his leadership, several professorships were created at the TU Berlin and a team was established in Silicon Valley in 2009 . To determine the academic direction, a scientific management committee was created, which initially included Prof. Bernd Girod from Stanford University and then Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wahlster from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sahin Albayrak from the TU Berlin. In 2008, 100 more telecom experts were integrated into the T-Labs and other scientists were also hired. The first companies were spun off.

In 2010 Heinrich Arnold was responsible for the realignment of Telekom Laboratories towards more application and implementation-oriented topics. As part of this reorientation, he took over the management of T-Labs in 2011, which he held until 2016. During this period, the foundations for three new business units in the area of cloud computing , connected home and mobile payment were laid for and within Deutsche Telekom. In addition, further focus areas were established with the topics of health , energy , M2M and media . As a result, numerous cross-sector projects for the digital industry were carried out, such as in 2012 in the Port of Hamburg together with industrial partners such as  SAP , Adidas , Claas , Osram , Siemens , Kuka and Trumpf .

Around 20 new businesses (spin-offs) were set up under Heinrich Arnold's leadership. These include Trust2Core, SureNow, Litedesk, Motionlogic, Benocs, Soundcall, Zimory, Bitplaces, Schaltzeit and the digital cloud-based telecommunications service immmr (2016).

The EU Labs program was launched in 2016 with the TU Berlin to expand international cooperation. The first new facility under this strategy was created in Hungary in 2016 at the Faculty of Computer Science at Eötvös Loránd University . The new professorship “Data Science and Engineering” deals, among other things, with the acquisition and evaluation of economic and environmentally relevant data with the help of cellular networks. In 2017, another endowed professorship was established at the Faculty of Computer Science at the TU Vienna .

Since 2017 the T-Labs have been run by Dr. Alex Choi and John Calian co-directed. In January 2017, the new Board of Management area Technology and Innovation was created within Deutsche Telekom. Dr. Choi reports directly to Claudia Nemat (Chief Technology and Innovation Officer).

Structure and subject areas

The T-Labs work within Deutsche Telekom for all corporate divisions. At the same time, they are an affiliated institute of the Technical University of Berlin , a scientific institution organized under private law that is closely linked to the normal teaching and research operations of the TU. In addition, endowed professorships have been established at a number of other universities . This concept creates an intensive exchange between science and industry. Experts, entrepreneurs and researchers work on practical innovations and disruptive technologies in the field of information and communication technology .

Since 2017, the T-Labs have been concentrating on the following three main topics:

The following subject areas at TU Berlin belong or were part of the T-Labs:

  • Internet Network Architectures (2006 to 2013) with the holder of the professorship Anja Feldmann
  • Quality and Usability (2007 to 2015) with the holder of the professorship Sebastian Möller
  • Junior professorship for Interaction Design and Media (2008 to 2010). In 2010 the owner Gesche Joost accepted a professorship for design research at the Berlin University of the Arts .
  • Security in Telecommunications (since 2008) with the holder of the professorship Dr. Jean-Pierre Seifert
  • Junior professorship for autonomous security (2009 to 2011). The owner Tansu Alpcan then moved to the University of Melbourne .
  • Junior Professorship Assessment of IP-based Applications (2009 to 2015). In 2015, the owner Alexander Raake accepted a professorship for Audiovisual Technology at the Technical University of Ilmenau .
  • Service-centric networking (since 2009) with the holder of the professorship, Axel Küpper

The other partners focus on the content

Around 120 telecom experts and around 180 scientists, interns , students , graduate students , doctoral candidates and visiting researchers from more than 25 different countries work in the T-Labs in a modern working environment that promotes collaboration between company employees and university researchers. The headquarters of T-Labs in Berlin is in the Telefunken tower of the TU Berlin.

Results

In October 2009 the T-Labs, together with the Bell Labs from Alcatel-Lucent , the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and the antenna supplier Kathrein, conducted field tests on a technology called Coordinated Multipoint Transmission (CoMP) to increase the data transmission rate of the Long Term Evolution radio network standard ( LTE) . CoMP was later introduced in the 4G standards as a subspecies of cooperative MIMO .

Furthermore, in 2012 a world record was set in data transfer with 512 Gbit / s in a wavelength channel in a glass fiber , the first FlowVisor was developed for SDN and the largest iBeacon field test was carried out in 2014.

One of the successes is also the micro-kernel technology that T-Labs u. a. was developed with the security chair of Prof. Jean-Pierre Seifert.

Since its inception, T-Labs have registered patents for over 900 national and international inventions.

Awards

T-Labs and their employees have already received over 50 awards, including the following:
