Sidi Bouzid ( Arabic سيدي بوزيد, DMG Sīdī Bū-Zaid ) is a district town in central Tunisia and the capital of the Sidi Bouzid governorate of the same name . The city is located about 200 kilometers southwest of Tunis and has around 48,000 inhabitants.

geography

Remote from the sea (135 kilometers west of Sfax ) and far from the capital Tunis, surrounded by mountains ( Jebel El Kbar 793 m above sea level), the city is isolated, which limits its development. The place is threatened by flooding from the Gammouda and Falet Galla wadis .

history

The city developed under French protectorate : in 1901 the Franco-Arab school of El Hamma was founded. In February 1943, the battle of Sidi Bouzid in the Tunisian campaign took place near the city . It began on February 14th at the Faid Pass , where the German Wehrmacht attacked the 1st US Armored Division , and was the prelude to the Battle of the Kasserin Pass .

On December 17, 2010, vegetable seller Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest in Sidi Bouzid after authorities had confiscated his goods. He was taken to a hospital in Tunis , where he died on January 4, 2011. The event sparked a series of protests during which, according to eyewitnesses, hundreds of young people demonstrated in Sidi Bouzid. This led to riots. Police used tear gas and blocked journalists from entering the city . This did not prevent the protests from escalating and spreading to other cities. The events led to the Tunisian Revolution , which eventually spread to other countries in the Arab world with the Arab Spring .

economy

The Sidi Bouzid plain is mainly characterized by the cultivation of grain, fruit and vegetables. The city is the largest vegetable producer in the country and one of the largest centers for dairy farming. In addition, lambs from a local breed of sheep that have also received an AOC are marketed.
