The Siebold Museum (Japanese シ ー ボ ル ト · 博物館) is a museum in Würzburg , which is dedicated to the doctor , Japanese and natural scientist , ethnologist , botanist and collector Philipp Franz von Siebold .

history

The Siebold Museum is housed in the Zellerau district at Frankfurter Straße 87 in the former director's villa of the Würzburger Bürgerbräus from the early days and was opened on July 3, 1995 by the Siebold Society . She was supported by the city of Würzburg as well as sponsors from Germany and Japan.

The villa is part of the listed complex “Würzburger Bürgerbräu”. The complex is listed in the Bavarian architectural monument list under monument number D-6-63-000-136. In addition to two museum floors, there are rooms for hosting various events such as concerts, symposia, meetings and other festivities. In May 2001, an original Japanese tea room was opened in the building.

We have a longstanding partnership with the Sieboldhuis in Leiden and the Siebold Memorial Museum in Nagasaki . Since November 1, 2004 there has also been a museum partnership with the Mogami-Tokunai Memorial Museum in Murayama . The museum commemorates the researcher Mogami Tokunai , whom Siebold got to know and appreciate in Edo .

Library

The Japan Library of the Siebold Museum is still under construction and comprises approx. 18,000 volumes consisting of books, magazines and articles written in German, English, French and Japanese. The aim is to make these stocks accessible for research and thus to provide a replacement for the gap created by the relocation of Japanese Studies from the University of Würzburg to Erlangen .

exhibition

The permanent exhibition shows exhibits on the life and work of the Würzburg doctors and scholarly Siebold family as well as objects from the German and Japanese stages of Philipp Franz von Siebold's life . In addition, special and changing exhibitions are regularly presented.
