Schenkstrasse settlement

The Schenkstraße settlement is a residential area in the south of the Bergisch city of Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The settlement is located in the south of the Wuppertal city and district Ronsdorf near the city limits to the neighboring city of Remscheid in the residential area of Schenkstrasse . It is located on a hill above the city center of Ronsdorf and the Leyerbach at an altitude of about 290 meters above sea level .

history

In 1924/25, the council of the then still independent town of Ronsdorf decided to build a settlement whose residents could also take advantage of public loans. The city then bought land on what was then Luisenstrasse (today Schenkstrasse ), had the settlement houses built and then mostly sold them on to private owners.

The houses were primarily intended for medium-sized families, whereas the multi-family houses below this row of buildings, popularly called Mau-Mau-Siedlung , were built much more simply and were intended for the workers .

description

Schenkstrasse settlement

The individual settlement houses consist of five rows, each with six individual houses built together. The fronts of the buildings face outwards from the city on the right-hand side of the street and are provided with green front gardens . The rear living areas and the adjoining terraces and gently sloping gardens face south-west. On the opposite side of Schenkstrasse , which has hardly been built on , is a spacious open meadow with an adventure playground and the buildings of the Diakonie nursing home in Ronsdorf .

The early row house settlement with its classic shape consists of row houses standing together in block form , which were built with full basements and built using the wall. The houses are two and a half storeys high (two full storeys each with mostly developed attic storeys). The ground floors are uniformly plastered and painted white, the first floors and roof spaces in Bergisch style verschiefert and green painted shutters provided.

The hipped roofs are oriented towards the eaves , but have four roof houses or bay windows per assembly . The older buildings are provided with triangular gables , while the residential buildings of more recent construction date are provided with mid-gables and an arched bay window facing the street. The houses are now privately owned.

Infrastructure

The nearest train station is the Wuppertal-Ronsdorf train station , a good 1200 meters away, on the Wuppertal-Oberbarmen-Solingen line , on which the S-Bahn line S7 ( Der Müngstener ) is on weekdays mostly every 20 minutes, during times of low traffic in the runs every 30 minutes in the early morning and evening hours and on the weekends and establishes a connection to the two Wuppertal city centers and inner sites of Elberfeld and Barmen as well as to Remscheid and Solingen .

The bus stops of the bus routes, some of which operate locally, are within walking distance at Am Stadtbahnhof , on Lüttringhauser Straße , Am Kratzkopf and at the Diakoniezentrum Schenkstraße . In addition, an hourly local bus (line 650) connects Schenkstraße and the immediately adjacent Mau-Mau-Siedlung , which was built in the 1950s and was later "condensed" with other residential buildings, to the center of Ronsdorf Opportunities to change to further bus connections.

Today there are neither retail shops nor restaurants in the settlement or its immediate vicinity. The center of Ronsdorf with the appropriate infrastructure can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.

Monument protection

The individual residential buildings Schenkstrasse 50–84 and 90–112 (each with the even house numbers ) are listed as historical monuments . They were on September 18, 1992, on September 24th and 25th. September 1992, January 20, and February 3, 1993, each entered under their own monument numbers in the list of buildings worthy of monument and to be protected in Wuppertal. Only the two semi-detached houses of the residential buildings Schenkstrasse 86/88 and the residential building Schenkstrasse 114 are not under monument protection.

The settlement itself as a whole is included in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal, but has not yet been registered as a listed settlement. The listed buildings achieved this status due to their location around an urban and cultural-historical significant settlement or as an important urban project of their time.
