Siegenburg Range Memorial

The former air-to-ground firing range (LBSchPl) Siegenburg (US military Siegenburg Range ), Kelheim district was an approximately 265 hectare training area of the United States Air Force (USAF) and is located in the Dürnbuch forest .

Originally, the training area was laid out in 1937 by the Wehrmacht . After the end of World War II , the US armed forces confiscated the site. In the 1950s it was transferred back to the Federal Republic of Germany , which left it to the US armed forces for sole use within the framework of Art. 48 (2) Additional Agreement to the NATO Troop Statute (ZA / NTS). Since then the place has been administered by the United States Air Force (USAF).

Most recently, it was mainly used by the Bundeswehr ( Luftwaffe JaboG 32 Lagerlechfeld ). On March 31, 2013, the Bundeswehr finally gave up its use, JaboG 32 was dissolved. Further use was only made by the USAF "52nd Fighter Wing" unit located in Spangdahlem / Eifel . After the F16 and A10 fighter aircraft based in Spangdahlem were relocated to the USA in 2013 and 2014, respectively , their military use by the USAF was officially ended on December 10, 2014. On this day the property was returned to the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BImA). Planning sovereignty over the site was transferred to the Siegenburg market by an ordinance of the district government, so that the municipality can now decide on its future use.

Based on an agreement already reached on March 30, 2011 between the Free State of Bavaria and the Federal Republic of Germany with recognition by the United States Army Installation Management Command, Europe Region, it was determined that the site should be given the status of a nature reserve after the end of military use. It can be assumed that larger amounts of ammunition are available on the training area , although there are no reliable lists of the exact locations or the type of ammunition. There is only an approximate list that BI Siegenburg has. An entry ban (restricted military area) from times of military use was therefore converted into an entry and driving ban for the protection of the public by an ordinance of the Kelheim District Office of December 9, 2014.

Since November 30, 2015, the above Agreement between the Free State of Bavaria , the Federal Republic of Germany and the USAF has become a reality. Since that day, this former military site has been officially designated as a nature reserve. This emerges from the ordinance of the government of Lower Bavaria, Landshut, dated November 10, 2015. With the headline "Our penultimate requirement has been met", the Mittelbayerische Zeitung writes about the general approval of this decision by the Bundestag member Thomas Gambke ( B90 / Die Grünen ), the government of Lower Bavaria , the district administrator of the Kelheim district and the Siegenburg citizens' initiative. Everyone agrees that this area must now be renovated and then made accessible to the public.
