biography

After secondary school , Martsch completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith. In 1969 he became a member of the left-wing Republican Club Witten (group of apprentices) founded by Detlef Thierig and took part alongside this, Hasso Lieber , Manfred Günther , Sigurd Hebensteit and others in a peace intervention - against the Vietnam War - in the Protestant Christmas service in the city center. In 1984 Martsch became a member of the Greens in the Borken district association. He became a member of the first Green Council faction in Borken as a "competent citizen", spokesman for the Greens in the NRW municipal and municipal federation for the area of the Münster district government and later founding chairman of the GAR (green alternative in the councils, the local political association in North Rhine-Westphalia).

The regional court in Bochum sentenced the "heavyweight part-time farmer" Martsch to a suspended sentence for fraud . In the same year he became spokesman for the LAG Agriculture of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia, which he remained until 2005. In January 1989 he was elected spokesman for the party (party chairman). During his term of office, the Greens of North Rhine-Westphalia made it into the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament for the first time . In 1989/1990 he supported the establishment of the Brandenburg State Association of the Greens and stayed regularly in Brandenburg .

Martsch was a member of the eleventh and twelfth state parliaments of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1990 to 2000 . Martsch, who was a part-time farmer and houseman at the time, entered the state parliament via his party's state list. His position in the list in 22nd place was not enough for a new entry into the 13th state parliament. In 1999 the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament elected him, whom the taz once called a “left populist who knows the green soul”, as a member of the Federal Assembly , which elected Johannes Rau as Federal President. In the same year Martsch was unsuccessful candidate of his party for the district elections of the district Borken .

Since May 1991 he has been supporting the Kurds in Iraq . He stayed frequently in Kurdistan and directed various aid projects, including the reconstruction project for Kurdistan financed by CARITAS Switzerland. Martsch, who is in close contact with the Barzani family, has been living in Erbil in Kurdistan since 2004 , where he heads the German Cultural Center, an NGO founded by Martsch himself, and works in a local trading company to support German-Kurdish trade relations.

Martsch is married and has three sons.
