Siegfried Methfessel (born July 5, 1922 in Dessau ; † July 22, 2012 in Bochum ) was a German physicist and professor for experimental solid state physics at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Methfessel studied mathematics and physics at the University of Halle and graduated in 1950 with a diploma . In 1955 he received his doctorate from Clausthal University of Technology . He then worked for IBM in Rüschlikon in Switzerland and at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights. In 1966 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

In 1969 he accepted the call to the young Ruhr University in Bochum. He helped to build up the physics faculty there. and headed the Chair of Experimental Physics IV (solid state physics) until 1987. Methfessel then headed the Institute for Physical High Technology (IPHT) in Jena for four years.

He sought scientific exchange, invited many scientists, including Nobel Prize winners such as Nevill Francis Mott, to Bochum and made contact with scientists from the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China during the Cold War . He helped set up the Bad Honnef Physics Center for the German Physical Society .

Methfessel worked in the field of solid state physics, in particular he worked on magnetism phenomena in semiconductors , superconductivity , valence instabilities and rare earth - chalcogenides , later also with amorphous metals.

He was married to the writer Inge Methfessel ; the couple had five children.
