Richter was born in 1922 as the son of a master upholsterer from Bomsdorf , who owned a craft business in Gröditz that also produced upholstered furniture. In Chemnitz he learned the profession of upholsterer . After the parental business, which had grown from 1 to 25 employees within one and a half years after the Second World War , was forcibly leased in 1948, Siegfried Richter founded his own company on August 1, 1948 in Winkel in the Hessian region of Rheingau with "Polster-Richter". Twenty years later the company had a turnover of 25 million marks and in 1981 the company had 66 branches with a turnover of around 95 million marks.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Richter, who handed over his company to his eldest son in 1987 and retired on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife , returned to his hometown of Gröditz and became its honorary citizen on November 15, 1992 , as the entrepreneur initiated and promoted numerous projects in the small town. In Gröditz, for example, he initiated the competition “Gröditz should become more beautiful”. With more than 615,000 marks, he supported the project to renew facades in the city. He subsidized business start-ups in the manufacturing, trading and service sectors in Gröditz with 10,000 marks if they existed for at least a year, which resulted in 25 new businesses. In 1996 Richter was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on the initiative of the Gröditzer CDU .

On August 1, 1997, not far from the Gröditz steelworks, the hotel "Spanischer Hof" was officially opened on the Röder, for which he made a large part of the designs himself. Richter invested 15 million marks in the construction of the four-star hotel in the pseudo- Moorish style . The state of Saxony contributed 2.5 million of the investment costs. Richter later bequeathed the hotel to the city and its profit was initially to be invested in the renovation of the Gröditz swimming pool, which began in 1998.

For his services, he was presented with the Saxon Order of Merit on July 20, 1998 by the then Saxon Prime Minister Kurt Biedenkopf in Dresden . Since August 10, 2001, a school in Gröditz has been called the "Siegfried Richter" middle or high school.
