Siegfried von Kospoth

Siegfried Freiherr von Kospoth (* 1740 ; † December 16, 1809 in Kremsier , Moravia ) was an hereditary officer and took part in the First and Second Coalition Wars.

Military background

Kospoth was from 1783 to 1790 Colonel and Commander of the second carbine regiment No. 6 "Archduke Franz". On January 16, 1790 he was promoted to major general. In the First Coalition War he served from 1792 in the Austrian Upper Rhine Army under Cavalry General Graf von Wurmser , and in 1793 led one of the three attack columns as brigade commander in the Second Battle of Weissenburg . In the run-up to the Battle of Handschuhsheim (September 24, 1795) Kospoth occupied the city, but had to evacuate it on September 20.

In 1796 he became a field marshal lieutenant under Feldzeugmeister Count Baillet de Latour and was mainly used as the commander of his cavalry . Kospoth took part in the battle of Malsch on July 9, 1796 with 16 squadrons in the second attack column under Field Marshal Lieutenant Count von Sztáray and on October 2, 1796 as commander of a mixed division (6,100 men in total) in the first battle near Biberach . There he narrowly escaped from French captivity . From November 10, 1796 to January 9, 1797 he took part in the siege of the French bridgehead of Kehl .

During the Second Coalition War, Kospoth was placed in March 1799 over a division in the reserve corps of Archduke Charles ' main army . He fought in the battles near Ostrach on March 21, 1799 and Stockach on March 25, 1799. He was then used until May 1799 as the commander of an observation corps near Villingen and in the Black Forest. When Archduke Karl stormed Mannheim on September 18, 1799, Kospoth commanded the second attack column.

At the beginning of 1800 he was appointed commander of the heavy cavalry reserve of the Austrian main army in Swabia and was under the command of Feldzeugmeister Baron von Kray . In the same year he took part in the battles near Engen (May 3, 1800) and Meßkirch (May 5, 1800). On March 1, 1801, Kospoth was promoted to general of the cavalry . He died in Kremsier in Moravia on December 16, 1809.
