Life

Siegmund Schlichting was a son of the later superintendent Karl Ferdinand Schlichting. The family soon moved to Beyersdorf , where he went to school. From 1862 he attended high school in Pyritz . When the Franco-German War broke out , he volunteered for the Stargard replacement battalion and took part in the war as a member of the occupation army. After the war he accepted an apprenticeship in a bookshop in Szczecin . After completing his apprenticeship, he worked temporarily in a Kiel bookstore and in the Schwerin court music store .

When his mother died, he returned to Beyersdorf for a long time. Here he composed his Beyersdorfer Kreuzpolka in 1879 - according to information from the publisher in 1882 - which was first performed at a village festival in Beyersdorf and soon in the surrounding villages. In January 1883 the score was published by the Stettiner Verlag Paul Witte under the title Stettiner Kreuzpolka . The piece became very popular in Central Europe and, with regionally different, sometimes drastic texts, was widely distributed. One of the best-known imitations of the dance is the Berlin Kreuzpolka by Rudolf Daase , published in 1887, with the text by A. Schmarsow “You see, he's coming”.

From 1880 Siegmund Schlichting worked for the Germania life insurance company in Stettin. For their 50th anniversary, he composed a festival march. In 1913 he retired because of an eye problem. But he worked again for insurance during the First World War .
