Siegward Lychatz

Siegward Lychatz (born May 23, 1939 in Königsberg ; † December 29, 2008 in Leipzig ) was a German training scientist, head of the GDR cycling center in Leipzig, national railway trainer of the BDR and diagnostic trainer. He was recognized worldwide as an expert in cycling science.

Life

Siegward Lychatz studied sport and history at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK Leipzig) from 1960 to 1964 . In 1981 he received his doctorate with a thesis on training methodology in track cycling with a focus on the sprint discipline .

In 1976 he became head of the Scientific Center for Cycling of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association of the GDR (DTSB) in Leipzig. Many of his athletes won medals for the GDR at the Olympic Games and World Championships.

In 1988 he and his wife fled to West Germany. There he was a diagnostic trainer for the Association of German Cyclists (BDR) until 1996 . In 1989, Lychatz had Jan Ullrich and Erik Zabel in his team as national trainer for one year .

From 1998 he worked as a track trainer for the Bavarian Cycling Association (RSG Augsburg and District Swabia) as well as trainer of the U23 Bundesliga team of the RSG Olympiapark Munich. He promoted young cycling talents such as Anna Beyer, Markus Reich, Andreas Welsch, Michael Spieß and Christian Grasmann . Lychatz was nicknamed "Doctor".

He published numerous scientific reports in specialist journals.
