The Sierra Mataracú (also: Sierra Mataracu ) is a ridge in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
location
The Sierra Mataracú is one of the Bolivian Voranden chains and lies between the Cordillera Oriental in the west and the wide plains of the Chiquitanía in the east. It extends in a north-west-south-east direction in the Santa Cruz department over the districts ( Bolivian : Municipios ) Buena Vista , Porongo and El Torno . In the northwest, the ridge is bounded by the Río Alturas de Yapacaní , to the northeast by the Río Surutú , to the east by the Río Piraí and to the southwest by the Río Colorado , its total length is about fifty kilometers. The Cerro La Tambora ( 1522 m ) and the Cerro Amboró ( 1471 m ) are among the highest peaks in the Sierra Matacarú .
geography
The Sierra Matacarú follows the folding direction of the Andes high mountains without reaching the absolute height of the central Andean regions, its eastern flank drowns in the erosion material that has been washed into the Bolivian lowlands over millions of years. Numerous smaller rivers drain out of the Sierra Matacarú in a northeasterly direction, apart from the Río Surutú, these are mainly the Río Mataracú, Río Saguayo, Río Cheyo, Río Litasama, Río Macuñucu, Río Semayo and the Quebrada Blanco. The southwestern part of the ridge together with the Serranía Tambora that adjoins it has been protected as the Amboró National Park ( Parque Nacional Amboró ) since 1973 .
Development
The Sierra Matacarú is almost uninhabited and only accessible via unpaved roads, but the diverse flora and fauna of the semi-humid subtropical mountain forests are increasingly being developed through tourism.
