Sigfrido Burmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried Burmann , who worked as Sigfrido Burmann in his Spanish adopted home , (born November 11, 1890 in Northeim ; † July 22, 1980 in Madrid , Spain ) was a German-Spanish painter , set designer and film architect with an intense career in the Spanish cinema of the Franco- Era .

Life

Burmann attended the art academy in his hometown Northeim at the beginning of the 20th century and trained as a painter and set designer. In 1908 a painting scholarship brought him to Spain for the first time. He began his career in Madrid in 1920 as a set designer and painter, and his work brought him together with Spain's most important poet Federico García Lorca . Burmann's theater sets adorned productions based on models by u. a. Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, Jean Anouilh, Friedrich Schiller, Emlyn Williams and even Bertolt Brecht.

It was not until 1933 that Siegfried Burmann, who Hispanicized his first name to “Sigfrido” in Spain, first made contact with the cinema in his adopted country. At first he was employed there as a set painter, architect assistant and simple architect, from 1938, after a temporary stay in Berlin, Burmann was mainly active as an outfitter. Burmann, who is married to a Baskin, designed the film sets for an abundance of entertainment productions. These were comedies and comedies as well as dramas and melodramas; But Burmann also designed the architecture for Francoist propaganda pieces. In fact, all of the important directors of the Franco era, including Edgar Neville , Ladislao Vajda , Florián Rey , Luis García Berlanga and Juan de Orduña , used his designs.

It was not until the mid-1960s that Siegfried 'Sigfrido' Burmann gradually withdrew into private life. In 1973, already well over 80 years old, he finally ended both his film work and his stage work. His older son, Hans Burmann , who was still born in Germany , worked as a cameraman, while his other son Wolfgang Burmann chose his father's profession and had been a sought-after film architect since the 1960s.
