Sigmund Zerer (also Sigismund Zerer , etc.; † 1509 or later) was electoral councilor and chancellor of Brandenburg from 1483 to 1509.

Life

He came from Hof ​​in Franconia, the home of the Brandenburg electors. His alleged year of birth 1444 on an old picture is probably wrong. In 1452 Zerer enrolled in Leipzig and three years later became a baccalaureate in the fine arts . In 1472 he was named among the candidates for a canonical by Archduke Sigmund of Austria. 1473 doctorate Sigmund Zerer in Padua for doctor of canon law .

In 1474, Zerer is mentioned for the first time as the electoral councilor of Albrecht Achilles , initially in Franconia and since 1476 in Brandenburg. In 1477 he traveled to Vienna on his behalf to see the emperor , and the following year to visit Archduke Maximilian in Brussels . Sigmund Zerer then worked as an envoy and decision maker in legal matters for the young Margrave Johann Cicero .

In 1482 he was sub-chancellor, then in 1483 chancellor. In this function, Sigmund Zerer represented the interests of the electors vis-à-vis the Brandenburg estates and strengthened their position of power. He was involved in extensive reforms of the legal system in the market. Zerer was mentioned for the last time on January 2, 1509, and he probably died soon after.
