Silvério José Nery (Néri) (born October 8, 1858 in Coari , Amazonas ; † June 25, 1934 in Manaus ) was a Brazilian politician who was, among other things, Governor of the Amazon from 1900 to 1904 and a member of the Senate .

Life

Silvério José Nery graduated from the Escola Militar and then worked as an officer. After retiring from military service, he worked as an engineer and journalist. He began his political career in local politics as a city councilor (Vereador) of Manaus , where he campaigned for the construction of the Praça da Saudade , a square in the historic center of the city. In 1882 he became a member of the Assembly of Representatives of the Amazonas Province, of which he was a member until 1889. In 1893 he became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Assembleia Legislativa do Estado do Amazonas) and was a member of it until 1896. He was then a member of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies (Câmara dos Deputados do Brasil) between 1896 and 1900 , where he represented the interests of the Amazon until 1899. In 1900, he was then briefly a member of the Federal Senate (Senado Federal) .

After his resignation from the Nery became governor of the state of Amazonas on July 23, 1900 and held this office for exactly four years until July 23, 1904. During his tenure, work began on the construction of the port of Manaus, the Porto de Manaus , which opened in 1907. In addition, on January 2, 1904, the daily newspaper Jornal do Commercio was founded . After completing his term as governor, he was re-elected to the Senate for the state of Amazonas in 1904 and was a member of the Senate until 1930.
