Silvana Konermann (born May 18, 1988 in Baden , Switzerland ) is a Swiss neuroscientist who has already received several science prizes as a teenager.

Life

Silvana Konermann is the daughter of the film director Lutz Konermann and the film scholar Barbara Flückiger . She attended the Saxon State High School Sankt Afra and passed the Swiss Matura exam. In 2009 she completed her bachelor's degree in biology at the ETH Zurich and studied psychology at the Open University in London. From 2009 to 2010 she worked in the laboratory of Carlos Lois at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , USA, in the field of adult neurogenesis . From 2010 she was a PhD student in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, also at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and researched from 2011 to 2015 at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT in Feng Zhang's laboratory in the field of optogenetics and CRISPR / Cas-Systems . She defended her dissertation Interrogation and Control of Mammalian Transcription in November 2015. Since 2016 she has been working as a postdoc at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA.

As a two-time winner of the competition of the Swiss Youth Research Foundation , she was honored with several special prizes at home and abroad as a teenager. In 2005 she won 1st prize in Moscow for her work: Development of a method for the local prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists . In 2006 she won a 2nd prize at the Intel ISEF in the field of medicine. As part of the award, an asteroid was named after her, (21546) Konermann (1998 QH34). In November of the same year she received the Future Victress Award of the Victress Initiative in Berlin to increase the proportion of women in management positions. In 2012 she was awarded the Schoemaker Fellowship at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. In 2015 she received the Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for her PhD research. In 2017 she was the winner of the Salk Women & Science Special Award. Also in 2017 she was awarded the Hanna H. Gray Fellowship of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
