Silverthrone Mountain (also Mount Silverthrone ) is the highest peak of the Silverthrone Caldera and rises approximately 70 kilometers west of Mount Waddington , the highest mountain in the Canadian Coast Mountains . The Ha-Iltzuk Ice Field surrounding Silverthrone Mountain is the largest ice field in the Coast Mountains south of the Alaska Panhandle .

geology

Because of its remote location, little research has been done on the volcano . The sources of its height range from 2865 meters to 3160 meters above sea level. The latter would make Silverthrone Mountain the highest volcano in Canada . Many of the current topographic maps, however, give an elevation of approximately 2865 m (9400 feet ). The summit area is permanently covered by ice and snow. Therefore, the exact position of the highest point consisting of rock could not yet be precisely determined.

The entire caldera saw most of the eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. However, many of the lava domes and smaller volcanic cones made of basaltic andesite are more recent and are still active.

Mount Silverthrone is most likely the most heavily glaciated volcano in southwestern British Columbia. At 975 meters, it has the greatest notch height in the southwest of the province.

Surname

Silverthrone translated means "silver throne". The name probably comes from the sight of the large ice field that covers the mountain. Silverthrone Mountain is the official name, and it is also often called Mount Silverthrone. A peak in the Alaska range bears the same name.
