Simeon Schterew (musician)

Simeon Schterew (more commonly spelled Simeon Shterev ; * October 24, 1943 in Sofia ; † March 26, 2020 ) was a Bulgarian jazz flutist who also emerged in the field of classical music and as a film actor.

Live and act

Schterew started playing the accordion and piano at the age of seven. He graduated from the Sofia National Music Academy as a flutist . In 1965 he founded the formation Jazz Focus '65 with Milcho Leviev , with whom he toured until 1970 and performed at international jazz festivals in Europe. As a professor of transverse flute, he taught again at his old academy from 1974. In the 1970s he played fusion and ethno jazz in his own quartet with Mario Stanchev , Theodossii Stoykov and Peter Slavov , then in the Focus Jazz Quartet . He also recorded with Gustav Brom , with Václav Zahradník , with Boško Petrović and with Nona Yotova. He also went on tour with Antoni Donchev and jammed with Chick Corea , Maynard Ferguson , Albert Mangelsdorff , Kenny Wheeler and Jan Garbarek . In addition, he made a name for himself, familiar with literature from Baroque to New Music , as a soloist in the field of classical music and recorded works by Antonio Vivaldi , Marin Goleminov and Teresa Procaccini . He also wrote chamber and film music and appeared as an actor in several Jackie Stoew films.

Prizes and awards

At the Jazz Festival Montreux in 1967 Jazz Focus '65 received the Critics' Prize. In 1968 Schterew was named the best European jazz flutist. According to the Down Beat , he was the second best flutist in the world at the time.
