Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib ( Panjabi ਸਰਹਿੰਦ-ਫ਼ਤਿਹਗੜ੍ਹ ) is a city in the Indian state of Punjab .

geography

The city lies between Ludhiana and Ambala on the national highway NH 1 . 30 km south is the city of Patiala , 40 km east of Chandigarh . Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib is on the Ludhiana – Ambala railway line.

The city of Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib has the status of a Municipal Council . It is the administrative center of the Fatehgarh Sahib district .

At the 2011 census, the population of Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib was 58,097. 10 years earlier it was 49,825.

history

Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib was established on April 8, 1998 when the two neighboring cities of Sirhind and Fatehgarh Sahib were merged. The latter was then still a Nagar Panchayat and has been the seat of its administration since the district was founded (since April 13, 1992).

On January 29, 1950, there was a serious railway accident in Sirhind when an express train and a freight train collided. 63 people died, about half were Indian soldiers.
