Siwan is a city in the state of Bihar in eastern India . It is the capital of the Siwan District . Siwan has the status of a City Council ( Nagar parishad ). The city is divided into 38 wards (constituencies). It is about 80 km from Bihar's capital, Patna , and is close to the border with Uttar Pradesh .
Demographics
The city's population is 135,066 according to the 2011 census. Siwan has a gender ratio of 909 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 79.61% in 2011. Almost 64.7% of the population are Hindus , around 34.2% are Muslims and around 1.1% belong to other or no religions. 13.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age. 6.1% of the population are part of the Scheduled Castes .
Infrastructure
The National Highway 531 connects Siwan with Gopalganj and Chhapra . The city also has its own train station from which the major cities of India can be reached.
