Preachers of the Night is the fifth album by the German power metal band Powerwolf . It was released on July 19, 2013 on Napalm Records ; it is the band's first album on the label and their first number one hit in the German charts.

Emergence

There was a label change in the run-up to the release of the album. the contract with Metal Blade , where the band had previously released four albums, had expired with Blood of the Saints (2011). The band looked around for new options and finally signed with the Austrian independent label Napalm Records . There was also a change in line-up, the second in the band's history. Tom Diener, who replaced Stéfane Funèbre (Stefan Gemballa) on the last album, was replaced by Roel van Helden , who is still the band's permanent drummer.

Like all previous albums, the album was produced with Fredrik Nordström , who was already regarded by the musicians as a sixth member of the band, in the Fredman studio in Hyssna, southeast of Gothenburg . The recordings took place in the Kohlenkeller Studios in Seeheim . The vocals were recorded in the Noisegate Audio Studio in Knorscheid , the bass in the Greywolf studio by bassist David Vogt . As with the previous albums, the organ of the Église Sainte-Barbe de Crusnes, Thionville , France was used. The choir was recorded in the Deutschherrenkapelle in Saarbrücken. As with the previous albums, Francesco Cottone, music professor at the Hochschule für Musik Saar and Karsten Brill's singing teacher, led the choir.

publication

The album was released on July 19, 2013 as CD, double LP in various pressings and as a download. In addition, a limited double CD was released containing four songs from the album in choir and orchestral versions as well as a patch. A wooden box also contained the double LP in blood red, the limited CD version as a mediabook, a lighter, a poster flag, a necklace with a band logo, two black candles with holders and an autograph card. This version is limited to 500 pieces and was available exclusively through the Napalm Records mail order.

Music genre

By and large, the style on Preachers of the Night is similar to the previous albums. It's still Power Metal with mostly epic elements. However, there are still several innovations: The album is significantly faster than its previous albums. Another innovation is the German text of the song Kreuzfeuer . Powerwolf only adopted this trick again with the album The Sacrament of Sin (2018), which contained the German-language song Stossgebet . In In the Name of God for the first time down tuned guitars were used. This time the focus is on the theme of the Crusades . As with the previous albums, the lyrics are full of puns and irony and, above all, blasphemous and critical of religion. The piece Coleus Sanctus (see kitchen Latin ) can be translated as “Holy scrotum ”, according to Matthew Greywolf (Benjamin Buss) “an ironic homage to the sanctuary of every man.” In the Name of God , the Synod of Clermont deals with . Nochnoi Dozor refers to the novel of the same name from the Guardian novel series by Sergei Lukjanenko . The song is intended as an homage to the Russian fans, as Powerwolf played in St. Petersburg and Moscow on the last tour .

reception

Reviews

Metal.de judged: “Powerwolf once again go to work with a damned love of detail, the new album is bursting with majestic opulence and pomp, epic grandeur, sing-along choruses and a healthy dose of self-irony. Effective, sweeping, rousing. ”The Metal Hammer wrote:“ To be honest: If you have such a good, reliable and very own drawer, you don't have to be accused of sticking to it. ”The magazine emphasized that the new songs were live would prove to be extremely effective because of, among other things, their "unbridled speed".

Jens Peters from Rock Hard also discussed the album benevolently, but also pointed out the high kitsch factor:

“True to the previous albums, the song material from the Saarlanders is unbelievably catchy this time too and catches the ear even after listening to it once. When it comes to singing, front man Attila has stepped up a gear and is more variable than ever before. Of course, anyone who gets tooth decay at Sabaton and their company will never take a liking to POWERWOLF, and Attila and his team will probably never get a prize for special profundity. But the troupe is always good as background music for a beefy party - especially live. "
