The Sacrament of Sin is the seventh album by the German power metal band Powerwolf . It was released on July 20, 2018 on Napalm Records .

History of origin

The approach to this album was a novelty in the band's history. So far, all albums were with the help of producer Fredrik Nordström (among other things also producer of Dimmu Borgir , Arch Enemy and In Flames ) in the studio Fredman in Sweden, Mille Petrozza from Kreator arranged the band this time to Jens Bogren , who previously worked with Paradise Lost and Sepultura , among others . This showed them a completely new approach. Although the band began collecting new ideas immediately after the tour of the previous album Blessed & Possessed (2015), these were not realized directly, but left alone for now. After a certain time, they presented their ideas to their producer, who worked out the songs with them. So it happened with Incense and Iron that the band used bagpipes for the first time , while other songs became much more straightforward. In total, the work on the album took about a year.

While Jens Bogren took care of the production of the entire album, the band hired Joost van den Broeck , who took care of the orchestral parts of the album. He had previously worked for bands like After Forever , Star One and Epica .

Publication & Title List

The album appeared in several versions. In addition to the normal CD, LP and download version, a limited double CD was released which contained the tribute album Communio Luporum , in which 10 pieces by Powerwolf were interpreted by friendly bands. The album was born out of a beer mood when Epica covered a song by Powerwolf during a rehearsal on their tour together. In addition to power metal bands such as Epica and Battle Beast , this also includes Saltatio Mortis and metalcore bands such as Heaven Shall Burn and Caliban . Eluveitie provided When the Saints Are Going Wild with a Celtic text .

There was also an exclusive box set which, in addition to the two CDs, also contained a bonus album with orchestral arrangements of the album title. There was also the album in gold vinyl as a gatefold, the tribute album as a silver vinyl pressing, a cover flag, five signed autograph cards, a cotton bag and stickers. Further pressings include a picture LP and an exclusive cassette version for the EMP mailorder .

Music genre

The new approach turned the album into a versatile and stylistically diverse record. Folkloric elements have now been added to their straightforward Power Metal from earlier years. In addition, with Where the Wild Wolves Have Gone , a power ballad in the style of Edge of Thorns by Savatage and Guns n 'Roses ' November Rain , both of which served as inspiration, was realized for the first time. Originally, the song was supposed to be carried only by the piano and vocals.

As with the previous albums, the lyrics revolve mainly around the religious themes, which are presented satirically and with catchy puns. The album title gives the concept: the songs mostly deal with the themes of sin and forgiveness. Here, too, Where the Wild Wolves Have Gone is a novelty. It deals with the subject of life after death and is rather thoughtful. With Stossgebet , a German-language song appeared on the album for the second time after Kreuzfeuer from the album Preachers of the Night . Some kitchen Latin is also used in the song .

Reviews

The Metal Hammer noticed “fine details that complement the sound, but fit perfectly with the given characteristics” and asked “how much change a band with such clearly defined trademarks would be good for. Because behind the eternal reproach hides the highest art: Powerwolf develop so inconspicuously in small steps and fine nuances that it seems as if nothing has been changed, but 'just' delivered another great album. ” Metal.de found , the band remains “mostly true to their tried and tested style” and summed up: “With The Sacrament of Sin , Powerwolf prove that they haven't lost any of their indomitable passion over the years. Album number seven offers all Power Metal apostles eleven sinfully beautiful hymns, which sometimes with a lot of feeling, sometimes with relentless speed ensure a varied heavy metal service. "

Chart placements

The Sacrament of Sin is after Preachers of the Night (2013) the band's second number one album in the German album charts.
