Sjón
Sjón , with full name Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson , (born August 27, 1962 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic author and artist .
He was best known for his song lyrics for Björk , especially Lars von Trier's film Dancer in the Dark .
life and work
He grew up in a suburb of Reykjavík , where he claims to have found poetry through the lyrics of David Bowie and the Icelandic sagas . He published his first volume of poetry at the age of 15. From 1980 to 1986 he belonged to the surrealist , performance- oriented group of poets “Medúsa”. During this time he published several volumes of poetry before his first novel Stálnótt was published in 1987 .
As a musician, Sjón appeared as "Johnny Triumph" (a play on words with the translation of his first name Sigurjón) among others with the Sugarcubes in the hit "Luftgitar".
In 1989/90 he lived in the Netherlands and in the mid-1990s in London , where he mainly worked with Björk . He has now returned to Reykjavík.
At the 2001 Academy Awards , Sjón was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Song category together with Björk and Lars von Trier . The song "I've Seen It All" from the movie Dancer in the Dark could not prevail against " Things Have Changed " from The WonderBoys by Bob Dylan .
In 2005 he was for Skugga-Baldur with the Nordic Council's Literature Prize awarded.
On May 27, 2006 he performed at "Weltklang - Night of Poetry" during the Berlin Poetry Festival . In 2006, Kleinheinrich Verlag published one of his volumes of poetry in German for the first time: “Gesang des Steinesammlers” (isl. “Söngur steinasafnarans”). Several texts by Sjón have been included in the anthology “Wortlaut Iceland”.
In 2007 Sjón held the Samuel Fischer Visiting Professorship for Literature at the Peter Szondi Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the Free University of Berlin .
In November 2008 his new novel " Rökkurbýsnir " was published.
