Sjaella is a German a cappella ensemble from Leipzig , consisting of six young women. The name Sjaella is a made-up word that is derived from the Swedish word "själ", which means "soul".

history

Sjaella was founded under the name "Chickpeas" in May 2005 by Felicitas Erben, Franziska Eberhardt, Helene Erben, Marie Charlotte Seidel, Marie Fenske and Viola Blache. Her first appearance at the Night of the Choirs in the Peterskirche in Leipzig was a success for the girls aged ten to thirteen. From then on, the six singers appeared in concert halls and at a cappella festivals in Germany and became prizewinners of various national and international a cappella competitions. Concert tours have taken her to Poland, Finland, England, Jordan, Azerbaijan and South Africa.

In 2010 Sjaella got a record deal with Querstand (Kamprad-Verlag), produced a CD and has since been seen and heard regularly on various television and radio stations, such as B. in the ZDF broadcast Annettes DaschSalon . In the years 2012 and 2013 the singers, who had meanwhile reached high school age, gave concerts a. a. at the Leipzig Bach Festival and at the MDR Musiksommer . In May 2014 they performed together with Bobby McFerrin in the Leipzig Gewandhaus. Their repertoire ranges from classical choral music to jazz standards as well as pop and rock pieces, such as by the Beatles or Sting , to their own compositions and pieces composed especially for them, e.g. B. by Simon Wawer and Graham Lack.

From January 2017 on, the contralto Felicitas Erben, who was paused for two years due to her studies, was represented by Luisa Klose (also old). Since their return in March 2019, the ensemble has been seven, even if the sextet remains the standard line-up for concerts.

social commitment

Sjaella has been the official ambassador for SOS Children's Villages worldwide since September 2016 .
