Skarvheimen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Skarvheimen , sometimes also Nordfjella , is a mountain region in Norway , which is north of the Hardangervidda and south of Jotunheimen . The name Skarvheimen was only introduced in 1995 after a vote on Norwegian state television NRK to create a collective term for the region, which includes the Filefjell , Aurlandsdalen , Hemsedalsfjell and Hallingskarvet National Park , among others .

The landscape of the area is very varied and is characterized by wide, fertile valleys in the east and steep mountain slopes and pointed mountain peaks in the west. Skarvheimen is a popular hiking and skiing area. The first mountain hut, Steinbergdalshytta, was built by the Norwegian hiking club DNT as early as 1895 . Today the DNT maintains 29 huts in the region.

The area, which has no more precise delimitation, covers around 4000 km². For comparison, Norway's largest national park, the Hardangervidda, has an area of 3422 km². Since Skarvheimen is not a national park , you can find roads, regulated lakes and, in the south, the railway from Oslo to Bergen. The largest part of uninterrupted high mountain nature can be found between Rv 50 ( Hol - Aurland ) and Rv 52 ( Hemsedal - Lærdal ), the core area of Skarvheimen.
