action

The film takes place at an unspecified time in the future. Memo lives in a small village in Mexico. He is a technology tinkerer who uses a manual for hackers to work on the Internet and listens to conversations. His father is a farmer who suffers from drought. To get water, father and son have to fetch water from a reservoir . The reservoir is owned by a US company and is closely guarded. People get water at exorbitant prices. The American company overhears Memo's wiretapping and suspects a terrorist who is planning an attack on the dam. A remote-controlled drone first bombs the house and then executes Memo's father.

Memo leaves the village and goes to Tijuana on the Mexican-American border. On the bus he met the journalist Luz. The tech geek Memo is thrilled with the computer interfaces inserted in their arms. It ensures that Memo also receives these interfaces. These interfaces give Memo a job in a hi-tech company that connects people to the network and lets them do virtual jobs in the USA. The employees are called sleep dealers . Luz, on the other hand, sells her dreams and thoughts. She connects to her computer and plays over her dreams. This blog is read by Rudy and he contacts Luz. It turns out that Rudy also works as a sleep dealer in the US, but in the security company that guards the dams. He was piloting the guided drone that killed Memo's father. Rudy meets with Luz and Memo and learns that he killed an innocent man on orders. Rudy, Luz and Memo then break into Memo's company at night and Rudy connects to his drone . He succeeds in destroying the dam. The reconstruction work will take the company years and the people in the small Mexican village will have water again for this time.

Reviews

“Rivera's science fiction film is a very satirical view of the American immigration problem. Because robots controlled from Mexico not only have the advantage that they are cheap, but that the workers stay on their side of the border. The science fiction effects Rivera works with don't look very good, especially when the screen resembles a computer game. The film is based on a pretty sophisticated idea, but unfortunately it does not do justice to it in terms of content or style. "

“Adventurous, ambitious and brilliantly futuristic:“ Sleep Dealer ”is a welcome surprise. Made on a budget, the film combines visually captivating science fiction with a strong sense of social criticism in a way that few films strive for, let alone achieve. "

- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
