Smack the Pony is a British sketch comedy that ran on Channel 4 from 1999 to 2003 . In Germany, the program was first broadcast from September 6, 2001 to March 27, 2003 on ProSieben . The leading actresses and authors were Fiona Allen , Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips . In addition, the actors Sarah Alexander and Darren Boyd often played .
Some of the regular themes the skits were about included unsuccessful relationships and competition in the workplace, but surreal themes were also part of the show. In addition, there were two other regular skits which were about a group of women looking for a new partner via television and a sketch in which they sang their own song.
A total of three seasons and two Christmas specials were created. After the series, the three women played together again in a film in 2004: 'The Gladiatress', a parody of so-called 'sandal films' such as 'Gladiator' or 'Vercingetorix'.
In 1999 and 2000, Smack the Pony won an Emmy for The Best Popular Arts Show .
"Smack the pony" is a little-known phrase for female masturbation .
Recurring and special characters / skits
- Dating agency videos: almost all episodes show different types of women who are looking for a person (e.g. the man of your dreams). In the first few episodes a photo and the name of the person can be seen at the beginning of the sketch, later the videos appear in the website layout.
- The Irritated Roommate: An irritable nurse, roommate of two of her co-workers, who stresses out terrible things so that her roommates always do things behind their backs, like putting soap or cleaning chemicals in their yogurt.
- The fake diabetes: A woman fakes diabetes so that she receives special orders and free samples in the supermarket and restaurant. These skits can only be seen in season 3.
- The forgetful women: The subject of the skits are three forgetful women who keep forgetting things even though they are obvious. So z. B. asked a woman to sign a petition to make life with dogs easier. With the petition she informs the woman that she is afraid of dogs, whereupon she is pointed out to her dog and runs away screaming. In another episode, a woman who is apparently pregnant and did not know anything about her pregnancy is asked to sign a petition to protect the children, whereupon she notices that she is pregnant.
- Sing contest: In this sketch, a woman (Sally Phillips) sings to a song on the radio and is occasionally interrupted by her colleague (Doon Mackichan), who starts in the next verse. The former tries again and again to outdo her colleague and becomes more and more extreme and louder when it comes to singing. In the end she literally screams, whereupon she apologizes to her colleague and says she cut herself on the paper. The sketch was voted number 22 by audience members on Channel 4's 50 Greates Comedy Sketches in 2005 .
- Rivals: Four women are constantly trying to outdo each other with gifts and other things.
- The Naked Man: This recurring element appears mainly in the first few episodes. Three women talk about everyday things, while a completely naked man walks through the picture to e.g. B. to get the bus and confuse the women accordingly.
- Woman in high heels: This type of sketch appears in all seasons. In it, a woman is doing sports in high-heeled shoes, the shoes being unsuitable (e.g. surfing).
- The veterinarian: In the sketches (mainly in season 2) a veterinarian appears who has difficulties recognizing the animals and thus makes pointless diagnoses, such as E.g. that a woman's cat needs glasses.
- The Ex: In the sketches (also mainly in season 2) you can see a man whose ex-girlfriend is clinging to his leg and hoping to win him back in various episodes.
