Andrei Tiberiu Maria (born July 27 in Piteşti ; known by his pseudonym Smiley ) is a Romanian pop and dance singer, composer , music producer , television presenter and actor . He was a member of the Romanian breakdance band Simplu from 2001 to 2011 . Maria made his solo debut in 2012 with Dead Man Walking . In 2009 he moved from his hometown of Piteşti to Bucharest , where he founded his own record company HaHaHa Production . With seven number one hits in a row, he is considered one of the most successful singers in Romania; He has also been nominated for a number of awards, including the Romanian Music Award for Best Live several times .

biography

1983 to 2001

Andrei Tiberiu Maria was born in 1983 in Piteşti, Argeş County, the legitimate child of a wealthy Romanian family. His family belongs to evangelicalism , which is due to his last name. At the age of ten he developed an interest in music. His mother discovered his musical skills at an early age and enrolled him at the Dinu-Lipatti Music School, where Maria later took music lessons.

After graduating from the Piteşti secondary school, he studied music for three years at the University of Bucharest and began to play guitar on the side. Maria was a member of the youth band Millenium 3 , which was founded by him and two other friends. Meanwhile Ioan Gyuri Pascu became aware of Maria. After the band broke up, he signed a record deal with Pascu. This marked the beginning of his career.

2000 to 2011: Simplu

At the beginning of 2000, he met his former friend CRBL (real name Eduard Mihail Andreianu ) at an event in Bucharest . After the event, the two talked and Andreianu had the idea of ​​starting a band. Maria had previously asked for membership in the dance band Akcent , but the group was already occupied by Marius Nedelecu , Mihai Gruia and Sorin Brotnei, so that Maria finally joined Andreianu, Ionut Dumitru (Piticu), Viorel Alexe (Francezu) and Laurențiu Ionescu ( Omu Negru) founded a breakdance group under the name Simplu in the same year .

After the foundation, Maria worked as lead singer and Andreianu, Dumitru, Alexe and Ionescu as background singers. Together the group released eleven studio albums: Provocarea (2000), X-trem de Simplu (2001), Oare știi (2002 as normal CD and as special edition), Zece (2004), Simply ReMiXes (2005), RMX Simplu (2006) , Best Of Simplu (2006), Oficial îmi merge bine (2006), Puppet (2009) and Dance or die trying (2009). The group made their debut with the songs Să zburăm spre cer ("Let's fly to heaven"), O secundă (One second) and Jumătatea ta ("Your half"). In 2003 they received the MTV Europe Music Award in the "Best Choreography" category.

In 2007 the Selecta Naționala, which is responsible for qualifying the Eurovision Song Contest, chose Simplu for the preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Finland. With the singer Andra , the five singers interpreted the song Darcula, my love , composed by Marius Moga , but were disqualified because the song had already been performed during the premiere of MTV Romania 2005. In 2011 the members decided to dissolve Simplu and devote themselves to a career as a solo artist.

Since 2007: career as a solo artist and actor

During his membership at Simplu, Maria began to write his own songs and to publish them, as he had already gained prominence within the group as a lead singer in the early years.

His first own debut album, În lipsa mea ("In my absence"), which he partly produced and which was released in 2008, was released in 2008. It was awarded a gold record and was later awarded the Romanian Music Awards as best album. The first track on the album also received an award for best song.

From 2007 to 2008 Maria starred in the Romanian TV series One Step Ahead . On December 9, 2008, a film was released that reports on Smiley's life within the group. Maria plays herself in the film and has to choose between true friends and international fame. He always gets into tricky situations.

About two years later, Maria released his second studio album Plec pe Marte ("Abandoned on Mars"), which was nominated for best pop dance album. The single Plec pe Marte with singer Cheloo climbed to number one in the Românian Airplay 100.

In the same year, the current electro and dance duo Radio Killer was formed, which Smiley himself brought to life. The line-up at the time of foundation until today consists of Serban-Ionut Cazan alias EleFunk, Paul Damixie, Alex Velea alias Crocodealer, DJ Cell Bock, Karie, Don Baxter alias Boogie-Man and the singer Cătălina Ciobanu alias LeeHeart.

With the debut single Voilà , the group achieved their first international breakthrough. Today radio killers are particularly successful in Russia , Italy , Spain , France , Great Britain , Slovenia and Greece .

Smiley 2016

In 2012 he achieved an international number one hit with Dead Man Walking . The song reached number one in the Romanian charts for three weeks. Dead Man Walking also reached high chart positions in Bulgaria, Hungary and many other Southeastern European countries . According to the Romanian website Mediaforest.ro, the song was the most played in 2012 on the country's radio and television channels.

The subsequent song Cai verzi pe pereți ("Green Horses on the Walls") in collaboration with singer Alex Velea and producer Don Baxter rose to number one in the Romanian Top Ten and was awarded a Romanian Music Award in 2013 in the “Best Video” category. In the same year Maria won the MTV Europe Music Award in Amsterdam in the category "Best Romanian Act".

The singles Oarecare ("Some") and Pierdut buletin ("Lost ID"), released in mid-2015 in a duet with DOC & Motzu, came in first in the Romanian Top Ten.

Career as a music producer, HaHaHa Production and Vocea României

In 2009 Maria founded his own record company HaHaHa Production in Bucharest. Some Romanian singers, including the dance duo Radio Killer , Alex Velea , Mihai Ristea , Sore Mihalache , Shaka Muv and Cabron , signed their record deals there shortly after they were founded. Maria also works as a music producer, producing some songs and compilations for Puya , Delia , Elena Gheorghe , CRBL, Anda Adam , Andreea Bănică , Andra and also for the Italian singer In-Grid . Today (as of 2016) there are around five recording studios, and around 40 people are employed in the main recording studio in Bucharest.

Since the first season of Vocea României , the Romanian version of The Voice , which aired on September 27, 2011, Maria u. a. next to Loredana Groza , Marius Moga and Horia Brenciu the jury. After the first season, which ended on December 26th, Maria received the victory as coach, after which his first candidate Ștefan Stan won. In the following seasons he reached third or fourth place with his team.
