Social sofa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A social sofa or social sofa is a sofa with mosaic in a public space, based on an idea by Karin Bruers. The benches are made of concrete and have a length of 2.24 m and the shape of a chaise longue .

Bruers came up with this idea to bring people into contact with each other. She wanted to see 1000 of these sofas, or Bènkskes (Tilburgs), in Tilburg . The first 23 were unveiled on the hill in May 2006 by Mayor Ruud Vreeman.

Banks were also placed in other locations in the Netherlands , such as Amsterdam , Groningen and Winschoten . The first social sofas can also be found in Belgium and Germany .
