description

Vegetative characteristics

Solanum dimorphum is a 0.5 to 1.5 (rarely to 2) m high half bush or shrub . It has only a single trunk , the branches are hairless and have a reddish-brown bark . The sympodial units are many-leaved. The leaves are 11.5 to 45 cm long and 4.5 to 20 cm wide. They are egg-shaped to elliptical and have seven to ten (rarely up to 16) pairs of leaf veins extending from the leaf axis. Both the upper and lower side of the leaves are usually hairless, only a few scattered, single-row trichomes can be found on the upper side , the lower side can be papilloscopic along the veins . The leaf base is suddenly pointed, the leaf blade is pointed towards the front. The leaf stalks are 0.9 to 2.5 cm long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are on 2 to 10 cm long peduncle , are bifurcated two or three times and finely papilous. The branches of the inflorescence are 1.5 to 8 cm long and each has only a single open flower , a total of up to 100 flowers can form on a branch starting from the fork. The buds are elliptical in shape, and shortly before they bloom they become pointed. The flower stalks are 0.9 to 1 cm long, papilose and curved.

The calyx has an approximately 1 mm long tube on which are broadly triangular, 0.5 to 1 mm long, dense to sparsely papillary calyx tips. The tips of the tips are not covered with clusters of trichomes. The crown is colored green or white, measures 1.5 to 2 mm in diameter and is lobed almost to the base. At the time of flowering, the corolla lobes stand on one level, are 8 to 9 mm long and narrowly triangular, at the tip and the edges they are densely papilous. The tip of the crown lobes is clearly hood-shaped. The stamens appear in two different forms, they are not fused into a tube. The stamens of the larger stamens are about 1 mm long, the anthers are 3.5 mm long and 1 mm wide. The stamens on the two smaller stamens are only 0.5 mm long, the anthers are 2.5 to 3.5 mm long and 1 mm wide. The ovary is conical in shape and hairless. It has a 4 to 7 mm long, hairless stylus with a fine, flattened scar .

Fruits and seeds

On the fruits, the flower stalks elongate to 1.2 to 1.4 mm and stand upright. The fruits are elliptical, 1.6 to 1.9 mm long and 1 to 1.2 mm wide. The surface is colored green and covered by four darker stripes. The thin pericarp dries up and becomes brittle. There are around ten to 15 seeds in each fruit . These are 4 to 6 mm long, pale tan or reddish.

Distribution and locations

The species grows in the northern and western coastal areas of Colombia and in neighboring Panama . It can be found in forests at lower to medium altitudes between 0 and 1000 (rarely up to 1750) m.

Systematics

Solanum dimorphandrum is classified within the genus of nightshade ( Solanum ) in the Thelopodium clade. The clade is isolated from the remaining species of the genus. It is assumed that the other two species of the clade ( Solanum thelopodium and Solanum monarchostemon ) are more closely related to each other and that Solanum dimorphandrum is considered a sister species of both.
