Something Necessary is a co-production by One Fine Day Films and Ginker Ink.

action

The film tells the story of two people against the background of the public unrest that followed the Kenyan presidential elections in 2007/2008. Anne lost everything in a gang robbery: her husband is dead, her son is in a coma, she was raped and her farm, the home of her small family, was devastated and burned down. The widowed nurse tries to cope with the traumatic events and to work her way back bit by bit and against all odds. She tries to forgive and is determined to give her son a new perspective.

At the same time, the film portrays a young man who was a member of the gang that night. Joseph is aware of the scope of his action - how does one find peace as a perpetrator? Both Joseph and Anne are looking for something that only the other can give them in order to process the painful experiences of the past and to look forward. But which of the two will succeed?

background

The film was made in 2011 from a workshop in Nairobi. The joint initiative of Tom Tykwers and Marie Steinmanns One Fine Day Films, DW Akademie and the Kenyan production company Ginger Ink. Aims to support the development of modern African film and to help talented filmmakers make their stories accessible to a wider audience to do. In 2011, 67 participants from nine African countries were invited to expand their skills in the areas of directing, producing, scripting, editing, sound design, production design and camera. From these participants the film team was recruited, which three months later filmed the script by the Kenyan screenwriter Mungai Kiroga under the direction of Judy Kibinge.

Something Necessary is about the impact of the 2007 election riot and the mark the violence left in individual lives long after the peace treaties were signed. The film is the initiative's third feature film after Soul Boy and Nairobi Half Life. The second feature film made as part of the workshop initiative, NAIROBI HALF LIFE by Tosh Gitonga, was the first film Kenya ever submitted for an Oscar in 2012. The One Fine Day Films workshop is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , the Goethe-Institut Kenya and ARRI Film & TV Services .
