Music style and text

In the summer of '89 (He cut holes in the fence) is it is a text-based song from a flight assistance in the summer of 1989, shortly before the fall of the wall says. The narrative is richly decorated and is reminiscent of a short story set to music. The protagonist, from whose point of view the story is told, travels from Hamburg to Mörbisch am See in the Austrian Burgenland near the Austro-Hungarian border . There, with the help of a bolt cutter, he enabled three families from the GDR, a total of 14 people, to escape and put them on a bus to the German embassy in Vienna . Back in his shared apartment in Hamburg , he has to justify himself to his roommates, who describe the action as "humanly understandable, but still wrong". After a dispute and a subsequent emotional outburst, he leaves the apartment and “was never seen again”.

The stanzas are performed using the spoken word stylistic device . The narrative speed is adapted to the story. The piece is mainly driven by the drum accompaniment. Only in the refrain does the presentation style change to the singing.

Music video

The video was made by Grand Hotel van Cleef in coproduction with the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, Department of Media Production . Directed by Mario Möller and Marcus Wiebusch. The project was supervised by producer Kathrin Lemme . The video tells the full story of the song with actors. The text is displayed for this purpose.

reception

Dirk von Lowtzow ( Tocotronic ) as well as the writers Juli Zeh and Benedict Wells had already made positive comments about the song in advance . Their comments were included in the press release. The music magazine Visions praised the song on its website:

“The recently made album announcement was followed a few days later by the clip for the first single“ Sommer '89 (He cut holes in the fence) ”- the song picks up on a chapter in German history before the turnaround and comes close. (...) The song wins thanks to Wiebusch's eye for detail, the lines of text 'In Mörbisch am See he checked into Pension Peterhof, bought a kebab and waited for the night' are just one example among many. "

Also ORF.at praised the song as a bold statement on the refugee crisis:

“In the song, however, Kettcar also address the larger political and social implications of flight - this is not the only reason why 'Sommer' 89 'should also be seen as a statement on the current refugee situation. "

Thomas Andre from Hamburger Abendblatt praised the song as a refined work that makes a statement on today's refugee debate with a story from the German past.

"'Sommer '89 (He cut holes in the fence)' is a position-taking, appellative song that sums up the Germany of the present in just under five minutes, although it tells a story long past."
