Song Yŏng

Song Yŏng (born May 24, 1903 in Seoul , South Korea , † between 1977 and 1979 in North Korea ) was a Korean writer .

Life

Song Yŏng was born on May 24, 1903 in Seoul , South Korea . He was one of the most important playwrights of the proletarian camp during the colonial period . After finishing school, he wrote short stories and plays for the magazine Yŏmgun (염군 | 焰 群), but they were never published. In 1922 he went to Japan to work as a factory worker. He later recorded his experiences there in works such as The Justice and the Canvas (정의 와 칸 바스) and The Opium Dependent (아편 쟁이).

He had his official literary debut in July 1925 , when he published his work The growing crowd (늘어 가는 무리) in the magazine Kaebyŏk (개벽) under the pseudonym Song Tong-ryang (송 동량 | 宋 東 兩). He was a member of the KAPF (조선 프롤레타리아 예술가 동맹) and particularly adept at dramatizing class conflict, which is why he was considered a pioneer of proletarian theater in Korea. After the KAPF was dissolved, he continued to write plays for two well-known theater groups and around fifty of his works were performed during this time.

His plays can be divided into three groups. The first group includes the pieces he wrote in the late 1920s. Typically, these are one-act plays that depict in a sincere manner the writer's need to instill class consciousness in the audience. Justice and Canvas and The Opium Addict fall into this category. The second group includes pieces from the early 1930s, such as B. Denied all visitors (일체 면회 를 사절 하라), Self-Defense (호신술) and The New Chairman (신임 이사장). The villains in these satires are forced to admit their misdeeds and reveal an increased awareness of their own performativity. The third group includes the pieces that he produced for commercially run theater companies after the KAPF was dissolved . The works of this period tend not to reach the level of his earlier critical or satirical works and many of them are pure farce, with two exceptions, The Golden Mountain (황금산) and The Yun Family (윤씨 일가)

After the liberation in 1945 he was briefly involved in the Association for Korean Dramatists (조선 연극 동맹) and in 1946 he joined the first wave of writers who emigrated to the north. In North Korea he was actively involved in the public arts and culture and wrote plays that corresponded to the party line. Neighboring Houses (나란히 선 두 집) is a piece that should increase labor productivity and The District Administrator of Kŭmsan (금산군 수) satirically depicts the political situation in South Korea at the time. It was reported that he was due to a chronic illness died, but it is not known exactly when, but it is believed that he died between 1977 and 1979 .
