Song of the Wanderer (Where Shall I Go?) Is a song written by Neil Moret (music and lyrics) and published in 1926.

Neil Moret (1878-1943, actually Charles N. Daniels) co-founded the Daniels & Russell Publishing Company in St. Louis and worked for Jerome H. Remick's Remick Music Company in the 1910s , before joining in 1913 and again in 1924 –1931 founded his own music publishing company, most recently Villa Moret, Inc. in San Francisco. As a songwriter Moret u. a. with Gus Kahn , Richard A. Whiting , Harry Tobias , Gus Arnheim , Edwin Lemare and Ben Black . His best known songs included Chloe (with Gus Kahn), She's Funny That Way (with Richard A. Whiting) and Sweet and Lovely (with Gus Arnheim and Harry Tobias), Peggy (with Harry Williams), Goodnight My Love (with Gus Arnheim , Harry Tobias, Edwin Lemare). The first lines of the Song of the Wanderer read:

“Where shall I go when I go where I go
Since you have sent me away
What shall I do when I do what I do
When you just haunt me all the day.
Where can I find what I found when I first met you
You were unkind but I simply can't forget you. "

The first record of the song was on September 27, 1926 by the singer Douglas Richardson . In 1926 also played Earl Burtnett and His Biltmore Hotel Orchestra (Columbia), the pianist Johnny Johnson (aka Malcolm Johnson , Welte-Mignon ) and the Art Landry Orchestra (Victor), type the title in 1927 followed by Paul Whiteman , Vincent Lopez (Brunswick) , Johnny Sylvester and His Playmates (Gennett, with Lou de Fabbia, vocals) and Annette Hanshaw (Pathé Actuel); Al Bowlly / Arthur Briggs covered him in Berlin. In the 30s this was followed by recordings by Jack de Vries ' Internationals, Joe Kennedy, Kid Howard , Harry James , Count Basie Five with singer Helen Humes (with Buck Clayton and Lester Young, among others ) and the Bob Crosby Orchestra. From the 40s he was part of the repertoire of traditional jazz musicians such as Art Hodes , Muggsy Spanier , Pete Fountain , Kid Ory , Eddie Condon , Albert Nicholas , Don Ewell , George Brunies , Wild Bill Davison , Jimmy Archey , Bob Haggart , but also by swing veterans like Billy Eckstine and Al Hibbler . In later years musicians like Dan Barrett , Doc Houlind , Danny Moss / Jon-Erik Kellso , Ed Polcer , Warren Vaché and Bob Wilber also covered the song. In the field of jazz, the discographer Tom Lord lists 115 cover versions of the song.
