The Songkhram River ( Thai ลำน้ำสงคราม - Lamnam Songkhram ) is a tributary of the Mekong and the only one without a major dam . With a length of 420 km it has a catchment area of 12,367 km².

The Songkhram rises in the hills between the Amphoe (district) Nong Han , province of Udon Thani , and Sawang Daen Din , Province Sakon Nakhon (Northeastern Thailand). From there it first flows into the province of Nong Khai (Amphoe Seka ), then returns to Sakon Nakhon in the Amphoe Wanon Niwat and finally through the Amphoe Si Songkhram near Chaiburi in the Amphoe Tha Uthen (Province Nakhon Phanom ) into the Mekong to flow.

During the rainy season between June and August, the river swells significantly and forms flooded marshland and smaller and larger lakes. One of these lakes typically covers an area of around 108  hectares . After the flooding, the water flows slowly but steadily into the Mekong.

The lower valley of the Songkhram is particularly important for numerous animal and plant species that inhabit it. More than 17 species of fish can be found here, some of which are on the Red List of Endangered Species . There are more than 150 plant species in the flooded areas.
