Tha Uthen ( Thai : อำเภอ ท่าอุเทน ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) of the province of Nakhon Phanom . The province of Nakhon Phanom is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .
geography
Neighboring districts (clockwise from south): the Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Phanom , Phon Sawan , Si Songkhram and Ban Phaeng of Nakhon Phanom Province. To the east on the other bank of the Mekong lies the Khammuan province of Laos .
history
The principality ( Mueang ) Tha Uthen was originally called Chairit Uttaburi ( ไชย ฤทธิ์ อุ ต ต บุรี ) and was located in today's Tambon Chaiburi. It was founded in 1808 by a Thai Yao leader named Thao Mo and his wife Su Nan Tha. Thao Mo emigrated here with his followers from the Mueang Hong Sawadi in what is now Laos. He was then awarded the title Phraya Hong Sawadi.
In 1870, King Mongkut (Rama IV) appointed his son Phra Si Worarat to be the head of the city of Tha Uthen, and he died in 1899. Later the Thai Interior Ministry decided that the city should no longer be run by a member of the royal family, but by a governor appointed by the ministry.
In 1907 Mueang Tha Uthen was converted to a district.

There are two municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:
- Woen Phrabat (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เวิ น พระบาท ) consists of the entire tambon Woen Phrabat.
- Tha Uthen (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ท่าอุเทน ) consists of the entire tambon Tha Uthen.
