Sonja Zwazl (born July 10, 1946 in Weitra , Lower Austria) is an Austrian politician of the ÖVP . Zwazl has been a member of the Austrian Federal Council since 2003 and was its President in the first half of 2015 . She was President of the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKNÖ) until 2020 .

Life

After elementary school and secondary school, she attended a business school from 1960 to 1962. From 1971 to 1973 she completed the photo technology school and from 1992 to 1994 she was an extraordinary student at the vocational school for artistic professions.

Sonja Zwazl started her professional career from 1962 to 1965 with payroll accounting at the Viennese construction company Peitl & Meissner , later from 1965 to 1969 as chief secretary of the Trieste Transport Office and Chamber of Commerce in Vienna, until she became the independent business owner of the company Schöne & Rahmen from 1969 .

Political career

From 1985 to 2005 she was chairwoman of the organization Women in Business in Lower Austria and since 1990 a member of the economic parliament of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce . From 1995 to 1999 she was Vice President of the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce until she became its President on December 3, 1999.

In addition, from 2000 to 2007 Sonja Zwazl was federal chairwoman of women in business, vice-president of the Austrian Economic Association and chairwoman of the Lower Austrian Economic Association. In November 2018 she was succeeded by Wolfgang Ecker as chairman of the Lower Austria Economic Association. In May 2020, Ecker was also elected as her successor as President of the Lower Austria Chamber of Commerce.

She has been a member of the Austrian Federal Council since April 24, 2003 . In the state elections in 2013 she received 684 of a total of 302,850 preferential votes cast for the ÖVP. From January 1 to June 30, 2015, she was the rotating President of the Federal Council .
