Ana Blatnik (born July 19, 1957 in Ludmannsdorf ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and vocational school teacher. She was a short-term member of the Austrian Federal Council in 2000 and was active in this office from 2004 to April 2018. In the second half of 2014, Blatnik held the office of President of the Federal Council . She has been a member of the Carinthian state parliament since April 2018 .

education and profession

Blatnik attended elementary school between 1963 and 1967 and then graduated from the Federal High School for Slovenes in Klagenfurt from 1967 to 1972 . As a result, she did not continue attending school, but began an apprenticeship as a retail saleswoman in 1972. She also attended a commercial vocational school until she was able to complete her apprenticeship in 1975. From 1975 to 1980 she worked as a commercial clerk and between 1975 and 1979 she made up her Matura at the commercial academy for employed people. In 1980 she took up a position as a vocational school teacher, where she continued her education from 1983 to 1984 at the Pedagogical Academy in Graz . Blatnik worked as a vocational school teacher until 2009.

Politics and functions

Blatnik was elected chairwoman of the ARGE Österreichische Volksgruppen in the SPÖ in 1990 and in 1995 became a member of the district party committee of the SPÖ Klagenfurt-Land as well as a member of the regional party executive committee of the SPÖ Carinthia, member of the regional women's committee of the SPÖ Carinthia and member of the district women's committee of the SPÖ Klagenfurt-Land. Within the party, she is also a member of the SPÖ federal party executive committee, a member of the federal women's executive committee of the SPÖ women and a member of the state presidium of the SPÖ women in Carinthia. On April 25, 2009 she took over the role of chairwoman of the SPÖ women in Carinthia.

Between May 31, 2000 and June 7, 2000, Blatnik acted as Federal Councilor for the first time, and on March 31, 2004 she was again sworn in as Federal Councilor. She was the area spokesperson for women and equal treatment in the Bundesrat parliamentary group of the Club of Social Democratic MPs and also area spokesperson for human rights, minorities and ethnic groups. On April 24, 2008, she took over the office of Secretary of the Federal Council, and since December 2010 she has also been the Chair of the Federal Council's Equal Treatment Committee. She is also a member of the Committee for Science and Research and a member of the EU Committee as well as the standing joint committee within the meaning of Section 9 of the Financial Constitutional Law 1948. After the state elections in Carinthia in 2018 , she moved from the Federal Council to the State Parliament.

Blatnik is also the deputy chairman of the Central Association of Slovenian Organizations in Carinthia (Zveza slovenskih organizacij na Koroskem) and deputy treasurer of the Carinthian national organization of the Austrian tenants' association .

Private

Blatnik is married and has one daughter. She belongs to the Slovenian-speaking minority and lives in Ludmannsdorf.
