When more and more workers were settled in Schwarzenberg for the city's expanding operations in the 1980s, additional living space was required. The development of a new residential area, which was called Ernst Thälmann until the fall of the Wall , began in 1981 on a southern slope that had previously been reclassified from the municipality of Beierfeld to the town of Schwarzenberg. The construction of the large block residential houses in industrial prefabricated construction lasted from 1984 to 1990 and was based on housing policy and economic factors, which led to a less attractive cityscape design. The population growth of the city of Schwarzenberg by around 6000 people up to 1990 was mainly a result of the influx of people into this residential area. The economic and social consequences of the collapse of the GDR led to a drastic population decline in the course of the 1990s, as a result of which almost every third apartment in Sonnenleithe was vacant in 2001. The population of the district fell from 7151 in 1992 to 3254 and thus to less than half in 2004. In order to adequately counter this development, the city carried out a cooperative workshop procedure in a pilot project supported by the Free State of Saxony urban planning concept with proposals for the renovation and demolition of the district was developed. In the following year, Sonnenleithe was included in the federal-state program Die Soziale Stadt and, in this context, a neighborhood management system with a citizens' office as the central contact point was set up, which was visited in 2005 by Federal President Horst Köhler .

In the course of the 2000s, the two most important landlords in the city, the Schwarzenberg housing association and the Schwarzenberg housing association, demolished numerous apartment blocks. Only one of three day care centers could be maintained. The middle school, which in the meantime was only operated as a single course, was closed in 2006. In return, attempts were made to increase the attractiveness and quality of living in the district by designing a residential park and a leisure facility with a BMX track and inline skating track, redesigning the school complex that houses a primary school and a special needs school, and publishing the district newspaper platform increase. Within the program “Local Capital for Social Purposes” (LOS), which has been carried out in Sonnenleithe since 2003 and is funded by the BMFSFJ and the European Social Fund, socially disadvantaged groups are supported in the form of micro-projects.
