During a visit to the Ore Mountains in 1880 , King Albert laid the foundation stone for the first observation tower . The 17 meter high brick tower was inaugurated again on September 11, 1881 in the presence of the monarch and was named King Albert Tower in his honor . In 1903 a mountain inn opened on the summit. At the end of the Second World War , 1945, low-flying aircraft damaged the observation tower, which initially remained in ruins after the war . Because of its dilapidation, it was finally demolished in 1967.

After the German reunification there was the possibility of a new construction, so that on November 17th, 1999 a new 40 m high tower was opened. It was named after its predecessor, the König-Albert-Turm , and has a viewing platform 31.5 m high, which can be reached either with a handicapped-accessible elevator or via 180 steps.

A new mountain inn, the Spiegelwaldbaude , went into operation in 2008. The owner of the restaurant with beer garden and sun terrace is the Mühlbach couple.
