The sundial is a natural karst cave near Königstein in the Upper Palatinate district of Amberg-Sulzbach in Bavaria .
Geographical location
The cave is located about 2000 meters west of Königstein on the western slope of the 515 meter high mountain Schelmbachstein .
description
The sundial is also called the Bauernloch or, because of its location on the Schelmbachstein, the Schelmbachstein grotto. The collapsed cave ruin is a spacious through cave and has a total passage length of about 26 meters. The western main entrance of the sundial, spanned like a rock bridge, is about 16 meters wide and up to 5 meters high. The second, eastern cave entrance leads into a 33 × 23 meter large and 12 meter deep collapse doline . The cave has a few remains of sinter.
In the cave cadastre Fränkische Alb (HFA) it is shown with the cadastral number A34, by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 371H011 and as soil monument D-3-6335-0012.
history
The second and smaller cave entrance was also responsible for the naming. The cave had the function of a sundial . For the rural population working in the surrounding fields, the rays of the sun falling into the cave hall enabled sufficient time to be determined. From the Middle Ages to modern times, the plateaus of the Franconian Alb did not have extensive forests as they do today, but were used for agriculture and grazing.
During excavations in 1918 and 1927, cave bear bones and some ceramic shards from the Middle Ages and the La Tène period were found.
The cave is used for leisure activities, which has left clear traces.
Access
The cave can be reached on foot via a hiking trail marked with a blue dot. There is a car park on the Königstein - Neuhaus an der Pegnitz road .
The cave is safe to enter all year round.
Surroundings
The caves Anton-Völkel-Grotte and the Breitensteiner farmer's wife are also located on Schelmbachstein .
