Sonja "Sonni" Hönscheid (born May 27, 1981 on Sylt ) is a German professional surfer. She is three times world champion in Stand Up Paddling (SUP) and twelve times German champion in surfing .

Life

Sonni Hönscheid is the daughter of the German windsurfer Jürgen Hönscheid . She has two sisters who also achieve outstanding sporting success as surfers. Her younger sister Janni Hönscheid became German surfing champion in 2013 and was Hönscheid's greatest competitor for the title.

Sonni Hönscheid grew up on the beaches of Sylt, Fuerteventura and Hawaii . As a child, she traveled with her family to her father's training and competition venues. When she was five years old, she moved with her family from Sylt to Fuerteventura, where she learned windsurfing and surfing. In 1998 her father set up the “Northshore Surfshop” there, which has been a family business ever since. Hönscheid commutes between Sylt and Fuerteventura.

During her World Cup preparation time on the island of Maui , Hawaii, she found herself painting . Her artistic work reflects her travel experiences of exotic locations and different cultures that she got to know during her surfing career. In Kampen on Sylt, her colorful, pop-art- inspired works are presented to the public under the title "Peace Love Sylt". So Hönscheid was able to gain a foothold as a designer. She worked for the sporting goods manufacturers Chiemsee , Starboard and Jucker Hawaii as well as for the beverage manufacturer Caprisonne . Hönscheid is also a brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz .

Around 2004, during Hönscheid's successful career as German surfing champion, she started Stand Up Paddling (SUP) on Fuerteventura. In 2009, Sonni Hönscheid won a World Cup race in SUP for the first time at the age of 28. She is the reigning world champion of the Paddle League World Tour 2018.

Hönscheid won the endurance race of the Paddleboard World Championships in Hawaii three years in a row. The route runs from the island of Molokaʻi to Oʻahu over a total of 32 miles (51.49 km) on the open sea and is therefore one of the toughest SUP races in the world.
