Jürgen Hönscheid (* 1954 on Sylt ) is a German windsurfer who is considered a co-founder of surf surfing. In 1974 he became vice world champion in tandem windsurfing , in 1982 he became the first German windsurf professional and is a specialist book author on windsurfing.

Life

1966 learned Hönscheid surfing at the Brandenburg beach on Sylt. Some lifeguards had brought surfboards from Biarritz , which he and his friends could borrow in return for temporary work. In 1970 he spent four weeks in Gran Canaria , where his later passion for the Canary Islands originated. On Gran Canaria he was able to go surfing for the first time with shortboards , agile boards with a leash . At that time, large, heavy longboards still dominated this sport.

In 1973 he started windsurfing and a year later he became vice world champion on the tandem board with Calle Schmidt . In 1978, Hönscheid married and in 1981, together with his wife Ute and their daughters Bitsy (* 1978) and Sonni (* 1981), traveled to Fuerteventura for the first time , which was hardly developed for tourism.

In 1982 he became Germany's first windsurfing professional with a sponsorship contract from F2 . When filming for an F2 marketing video in Tunisia could not be carried out as planned in the same year , the entire team traveled to Fuerteventura at the suggestion of Hönscheid, where the project was completed. This film and Jürgen Hönscheid caused a sensation at boot in Düsseldorf in 1982 . As a result, Fuerteventura was temporarily considered "Hawaii of Europe" by windsurfers. Over the years a number of internationally known windsurfers have settled on Fuerteventura.

At the first Windsurf World Cup on Fuerteventura, which he helped to organize , for which Robby Naish , Pete Cabrinha , Mike Eskimo , Phillip Pudenz, Kai Schnellbacher and Charly Messmer were also registered, there was no rating due to days of calm .

In 1983 Jürgen Hönscheid led the World Cup overall ranking in windsurfing when three broken cervical vertebrae prevented him from participating in the tour after a serious training accident off Sylt. In the spring of 1984 he again achieved first place in the wave riding discipline at the World Cup in Omaezaki ( Japan ) .

In 1986, the numerous journeys with up to 300 kilograms of luggage around the globe became too much for him and his family. He canceled his professional contract as a team driver and board developer at Mistral , where he worked from 1984, which was still running for several years . He then sold his surf school on the Brandenburg beach, the Sylt surf shop including sailmaking, leased his house in Westerland and emigrated with the family to Fuerteventura.

In his years as a professional, Hönscheid had learned shaping from the most famous board developers ( shapers ) at the time and was responsible, among other things, for the design of the Strato, Comet, Sunset, Starlit and Bullit from F2, which were known in the 1980s . Therefore, he set out in his new home with the development of wind surfing and surfboards in a small workshop independently . In 1998 he opened his own surf shop, which existed as a family business until 2020.

In 1990 his youngest daughter Janni was born, who became German surfing champion in 2013 on both short and longboard. His son Dennis, born in 1994, died in 1997 as a result of medical malpractice. Sonni is 12 times German surfing champion and multiple Stand Up Paddling (SUP) world champion. In 2008 he published his autobiography “My employer is the wind”, in which he collected photos, anecdotes and facts looking back over 50 years of windsurfing and surfing history.

Jürgen Hönscheid has remained true to windsurfing to this day and has also been active in stand up paddling for several years.
