Philippe Ricord (born December 10, 1800 in Baltimore , † October 22, 1889 in Paris ) was a French surgeon and venerologist (doctor for venereal diseases ).

Life

Born in Baltimore, the son of French parents who fled the terror of the French Revolution to the United States of America , he completed his medical training at the Sorbonne in Paris from 1820 to 1826 , studied with Guillaume Dupuytren and Jacques Lisfranc , and graduated graduate from medical studies with a doctorate. As a surgeon at the Hôpital du Midi and chief physician at the Hôpital des Vénériens in Paris, he mainly dealt with venereal diseases. He described the 3 stages of syphilis . Ricord experimentally demonstrated the difference between syphilis and gonorrhea, thereby refuting Hunter's thesis that syphilis is merely a more severe form of gonorrhea .

Philippi Record was accepted into the "Académie de médicine" in 1850. He became Prince Napoléon's personal physician in 1852, the Emperor's surgeon consulté in 1869 and finally president of the military hospitals in besieged Paris in 1870/71.
