Sophie Gent

Sophie Gent (* in Perth , Western Australia) is an Australian violinist and concertmaster specializing in historical performance practice .

Live and act

After studying classical violin in her hometown, with Paul Wright at the University of Western Australia , she deepened her skills on the baroque violin with Ryo Terakado in The Hague between 1999 and 2005 . In 2002 she won first prizes at the “International Van Wassenaer Competition” and at the “International Premio Bonporti Concours” in Roveto with her ensemble “Quartett Opera Quarta”, of which Tuomo Suni also belongs. Sophie Gent is active as a soloist and chamber musician. With well-known ensembles such as the "Ricercar Consort" with which she is the first solo violinist, "Il Gardellino", "L'Armonia Sonora", "Capriccio Stravagante", "L'Armonia Sonora", the orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent , of the La Petite Bande , the "Bach Concentus" or "Les Muffatti", she regularly appears as concertmaster and has made numerous recordings. She is a member of the string quartet 'Mito Dell'arco' in Japan, with, among others, Ryo Terakado and the cellist Hidemi Suzuki and she is concertmaster of the Canadian-based “Ensemble Masques” under Olivier Fortin. In addition to these activities, she founded her own ensemble "The Queens Consort" in 2010

Sophie Gent played a violin made by Gennaro Gagliano in 1732, which was made available to her by the Jumpstart Junior Foundation. A Jakob Stainer from 1676 has been playing since 2014, which Marie Leonhardt played for a long time . She taught baroque violin at the Amsterdam Conservatory in the academic year 2011–2012 .
