South Williamsport is on the south side of the Susquehanna River in the Appalachian Mountains . The population is 6,412 (2000).

history
South Williamsport celebrated the centenary of its founding as a borough in 1986. On November 29, 1886, Lycoming County incorporated the parishes of Rocktown, Billman and South Williamsport into the county. The land previously belonged to Armstrong Township.
The first inhabitants of the Susquehanna River valley were the Iroquois. In 1768 the British bought the land of what is now Lycoming County from the Indians. After the American War of Independence, the country was divided into several counties in 1795. Also in that year the neighboring parish Williamsport was founded on the other side of the river.
The Dutch emigrant Aaron Hagermann is believed to be the first settler in South Williamsport. The first industrial plants consisted of sawmills and furniture factories. After the end of the civil war, however, this industry lost its importance as the surrounding forests were largely cleared and the loggers moved further west.
today
Nowadays the local trade consists mainly of timber factories. The wood is obtained from the reforested whale. The biggest employers in town are: Little League Baseball Inc., Keystone Friction Hinge, South Williamsport Area School District and the New Lycoming Bakery. Although the river in the north and the Bald Eagle Mountains in the south limit geographic growth, the population was able to grow steadily.
