Late Autumn ( Japanese 秋日 和 , Akibiyori , literally: "a sunny autumn day") is a Japanese film from 1960 by director Yasujirō Ozu .

action

Three middle-aged friends who knew each other from university meet for the 7th memorial service for a deceased colleague Miwa. They are Mamiya, Taguchi and Hirayama (Ryūji Kita). Miwa's widow Akiko (Setsuko Hara) and her 24-year-old daughter Ayako (Yōko Tsukasa) are also present. In addition, Miwa's older brother (Chishū Ryū) appears late. - After the service, the men stay together to eat and drink. They think mother Akiko is still looking good even though she is in her forties. The three also think it is time for their beautiful daughter Ayako to marry. Taguchi says he has someone suitable, but then it turns out that he is already engaged.

Mamiya now offers his colleague Gotō (Keiji Sada), but Ayako, who lives with her mother, tells her that she does not want to get married. One day Ayako meets Goto in Mamiya's office, but he is indifferent. On a day trip, Ayako hears that Goto has an interest in her and begins to meet with him. When Mamiya wants to know, Ayako says she distinguishes between romance and marriage, this is a romance. The three friends suspect that this is an excuse because their mother is still alone. Remarrying the mother would be the solution. Mamiya and Taguchi now urge Hirayama, who is widower, to marry Akiko. Hirayama doesn't want that at first, but after talking to his son he's ready.

Hirayama now asks his friends for help. But before they get any further, Mamiya carelessly tells the daughter that the mother is about to remarry. Ayako asks her mother at home why she hadn't told her about the impending remarriage. The mother is surprised and replies correctly that she does not know anything about it. The daughter doesn't believe her and runs away angrily. She goes to her friend Yuriko (Mariko Okada), who likes the remarriage of her mother. She also thinks Ayako shouldn't focus on himself, which annoys Ayako.

Yuriko, annoyed for her part, confronts the three friends with the story and finds out their plans. Mamiya apologizes for her action, but Yuriko realizes that this is the chance for a solution and decides to support Hirayama. - Akiko and Ayako take a trip together to Nikko, where they meet Miwa's brother. She encourages her mother to marry, but she explains that she has no plans to do so, but that Ayako need not worry about her. Now the daughter's wedding takes place, the three old gentlemen meet afterwards and think about how they can marry off the widower. In the last scene, the mother tidies up at home and finally remains seated pensively.

background

The film begins with a look at the recently completed Tokyo Tower , which is modeled on the Eiffel Tower , but slightly exceeds it in height: a symbol for Japan, which is now rising again after the lost war . Akiko is a widow, but not one of the war widows featured in previous Ozu films. Yuriko, the friend of the daughter Ayako, is the modern young woman. She can be seen at home in jeans and later, in the discussion scene with the old men, forbids being addressed in the children's form "Yuri-chan". As in the “Journey to Tokyo” , the overnight stay (here in Nikkō , Mount Nantai is quoted with the view of its ideally conical side) is shown in a large, noisy ryokan . - The film title “Late Autumn” alludes to the mother's name: Akiko literally means “autumn child”.
