Spain is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles , California . The band around Josh Haden, the son of jazz bassist Charlie Haden , was founded in 1993 and paved the way for the slowcore movement. The original line-up consisted of Haden ( bass , vocals ), Ken Boudakian ( lead guitar ), Merlo Podlewski ( rhythm guitar ) and Evan Hartzell ( drums ).

history

Beginnings

After the band had recorded a very well-received 7 ″ single and played regularly at the legendary Silver Lake venue Spaceland (now: The Satellite), they were signed to Restless Records in 1994. In early 1995 the band traveled to San Francisco to record their debut album for a month with Norm Kerner (American Music Club) at Brilliant Studios . In September 1995 it was released under the title The Blue Moods of Spain .

From this album, the song Spiritual was covered by Johnny Cash in 1996 on his Grammy-winning album Unchained , as well as by the Soulsavers on their release It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land (2007). Also, Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny coverten Spiritual on their album Beyond the Missouri Sky .

This first album gave the band a solid fan base. In the same year they toured the US , Europe and Australia , made an appearance on French television and opened up for the Cocteau Twins on their Atmospheric Music Legends' final US tour . Her album was also listed in the best-of lists of many music magazines. In the mid / late 1990s, several songs by Blue Moods of Spain were played in various films and TV shows ( Phoenix , In God's Hands , Winter Sleeper , Garage Days , Popular ).

development

Spain's second album She Haunts My Dreams was recorded in 1999 on a Swedish island in Vaxholm . The Swedish jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson , the Soundtrack Of Our Lives guitarist Björn Olsson and REM and Beck drummer Joey Waronker were all involved. This album contains the song Every Time I Try , which was included by Wim Wenders in the soundtrack of his film The End of Violence . With this album, the band toured extensively major venues across Europe. The song Our Love Is Gonna Live Forever was played on the HBO series Six Feet Under .

Shortly before their third album I Believe was released in 2001 , Sullivan and Podlewski left the band. Sullivan wanted to concentrate more on his solo work and Podlewski accepted the invitation to play in the newly formed band of Jack Johnson . In order not to have to build a completely new band from scratch, Haden took a break from the band and recorded a solo album for DreamWorks Records. This was later released on his own label "Diamond Soul Recordings".

In 2003 the compilation Spirituals: The Best Of Spain was released .

New beginning

After this long break, Haden reformed the band in 2007 with a new line-up. From then on, Randy Kirk ( piano , guitar ) and Matt Mayhall ( drums ) played with changing lead guitarists . After six years of inactivity, Spain presented the complete album “The Blue Moods of Spain” with this new formation at the “Tanned Tin Festival” in Castellón , Spain and at several shows in the USA.

In April 2009 the lead guitarist Daniel Brummel joined them, who had previously played with "Ozma", the "Sanglorians" and "The Elected". This new line up led to the release of the single "I'm Still Free" in 2010.

Josh Haden

In 2012 the band released the new album "The Soul of Spain", which was released in the US by Diamond Soul Recordings and in Europe by Glitterhouse Records . Especially in Europe, the album received a lot of positive press reactions.

"The Soul Of Spain" is a small work of art of slowness, a source of calm, with no esoteric aftertaste. And Josh Haden once again proves his skills as a songwriter of contemplative epics like "Only One", which unfold their beauty like a slowly clearing sky. In terms of sound and text, everything here always seems to hang on to one cognition, to stagnate at the moment of observation. "

- Rolling Stone , May 2012

With this album, Spain toured Belgium, Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Portugal in 2012. On this tour, the new band member Dylan McKenzie (Derde Verde) appeared with the acoustic guitar for the first time. In an interview, Haden announced that the band is currently working on their fifth studio album.

Spain toured Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland in autumn 2012.

The album Sargent Place was released on February 28, 2014 .

This was followed by the album Carolina in 2016 and the album Mandala Brush on September 28, 2018 .
