Systematics

The English botanist Philip Miller described the species in 1768 under the taxon Scilla hispanica . The German botanist Werner Rothmaler moved them in 1944 under the taxon Hyacinthoides hispanica , which is valid today, together with other species from the genus of the bluestars ( Scilla ) in a new genus of the rabbit bells ( Hyacinthoides ). Further synonyms for the species are Endymion campanulatus (Aiton) Willk. and Scilla campanulata Aiton .

Others

The Spanish rabbit bell forms with the Atlantic rabbit bell a richly shaped and difficult to distinguish bastard Hyacinthoides hispanica × Hyacinthoides non-scripta = Hyacinthoides × massartiana Geerinck (Syn. Hyacinthoides × variabilis P.D.Sell ). Cultivated and overgrown plants mostly go back to this bastard.
